Re: G Wagen (Special Case)

My 230GE has been great but then again I have spent £1500 in the past year on an engine rebuild as it had been off the road for quite a while. Mine's coming up for sale in the next week in ebay/Autotrader but you can contact me at astonandy@hotmail.com if you are interested.

Re: G Wagen (Special Case)

Sorry, Error... Insurance for me 19 yr old student etc is 1440 for the 230 GE and 2088 for the 280 GE. Also could some one advise me whether the 280 GE LWB with the 463 grille and wing mirrors currently sale on autotrader for 4400 is any good? Cheers

Hi there's a seven seat 280ge on ebay today with seven hours to run and no starting bid yet... if you can believe the ad it shld be in fair shape./.. not much mot or tax left and from the angle its sitting at in the pics it needs a set of rear springs...might be worth following up... rgds
Thanks for the info. I think the seller wants circa 5k for it. And I think the insruance on the 280 and the consumption is really too far stretch for a student. Cheers anyway. Angus

oh p.s russ, if they have a job, unless its delivery driver etc, put that as their occupaton, im still registered at the hospital as an nhs physio and that cuts loads off over a student!

Re: G Wagen (Special Case)

Dear Tom and Russ,

I may be able to offer some help in this aspect. I have been searching for insurance over Christmas and found that a 230GE is a lot cheaper to insure than a 280GE (as far as I can remeber it was 1500 pounds for 230GE no NCB, third party, me 19 years old, student VS. about 3.5k on the 280GE) Also try Marks and Spencers they are really cheap.

Re: G Wagen (Special Case)

ended up in my name after my dad had a claim. if they are driving the 280, teach them the costs of fuel otherwise you will have to pay a huge bill! keep hunting around for it, i was with norwich union, but there are better, i just got a new quote on my peugeot and it was over 300 less than NU using the budgetinsurance website. it still wont be cheap though, insurance for 17year old boys isnt, you may also have trouble getting them as named drivers on it with some companies, i had the same trouble with the van insurance. if you have no luck online phone up and talk to them, the g is a specialist vehicle and you can barter with them, specailly if you are part of the club and own more than one of them. if need be go third party fire and theft, it may be only slightly cheaper it may be a lot, but we know its hard to damage these things.

sorry for the babble i was writing as i thought.

Re: G Wagen (Special Case)

Tom,

I’m pondering the options with respect to my son’s who are coming up to 17. Thinking about getting them insured for the 280 so I’m interested in how you got on with the insurance.
Did you insure your 230 in your name or were you a named driver?
Cheers,
Russ

I paid a very small sum for mine but i was just very lucky. other members will be much better on the pricing, but hold out for the right one. mine had about 60k miles and had no marks on it at all. Older members will know much more about pricing though, i sold mine for £2300 (correct me if i am wrong fred) but as i said that was after a lucky purchase.

as for the rear seats, mine did not have them, but if the model you finally purchase does not have them then they can easily be sourced and fitted, German ebay etc etc.

TomThanks Tom, will definitely will looking seriously for one soon.

hi Angus, i was in same position, bought my 230ge swb when i was 17. as far as reliability is concerned, the only thing that was changed on mine was the starting motor, it wasnt a desperate job but just gave me peace of mind.

one thing i will warn you about is fuel, if you start putting your foot down heavy it can really dip into the low teens.

i bought mine through this club at a bargain price and sold it on for a very nice price to a fellow member (the scot rep http//gwoa.co.uk/uploads/forums/g230_balade_borders_1.jpg there it is up north now)

it was a great thing to drive, and similar to me, you like driving 4x4's so that shouldnt be a problem. a tip for insurance is to try the womens one Diamond, i know that might sound odd but they do quote for men too.

finally we may seem bias but the g is much more reliable than the land rover, its more individual and due to its diff locks much better on the rough stuff.

any questions just message me.

Tom
Dear Tom,

Cheers for the message, very comprehensive. Just wondering what kind of price should I be paying for a 1987-89 230GE SWB? and do they come with those side seating seats at the back to make it a 7 seater?

Cheers
Angus

G Wagen (Special Case)

Dear All,

I am new to the forum, but has been browsing for around a week. I am 19 and has a love for 4x4's especially utility types like G wagens and Land Rovers. I am tempted to purchase a 230GE becasue of the low insurance, but my budget is only around 4.5k, would I be able to purchase a decent one? The size is not a matter for me as I have been driving my dad's Range Rover and I am used to controls on a Mercedes. Also, are 230GE reliable, we used to own a W124 230E and the mechanics is amence and bullet prove. I will value your post very much. Thanks

Angus
