Unimog axels project?
Hi all,
I'm playing with the idea to put unimog axles of a 404 under my G.
My brother has a set to spare and he said I could have them.
So now I was wondering what does need to be changed or adapted?
I've been reading all I could find on this forum but couldn't find all the answers or some pictures.
Hope somebody can point me in the right direction.
I know of companies that will sell you the parts, but I'm working with a limited budget so...
Anyway allready many thanks for the input.
Best regards,
Dirk
now i could be completely wrong but i thought there was something about MB suing anybody who did this conversion and as a result a number of the vehicles which had been converted already had to be de-converted.... sorry memory is vague....
but I do know that ORC are the people who were doing the conversions.
I had heard it included private individuals but as i said memory is vague and i was under the impression that you could do whatever you wanted to to your own vehicle... afterall not like you will bring it in for warranty work...
I think it was just that... gossip. I would believe MB threatened ORC with taking away from them any support hitherto given to them if they did not stop putting Unimog axles in the Gs they converted, plus threat of legal action, given that they were doing this as a company. But being done by a private individual is a different thing: I would think you can do basically anything you fancy that you can then get autorized by the regulator in your country to use on a public road.
I know Carlos Acosta has done this in Spain: on a LWB W463 which he had to convert to the older, part-time W460 VG80 transfer case because the axles in the Unimog turned opposite to those of the W463. Pitty he lost permanent 4wd in the process. But the job entails a lot of reengineering of suspension mounts because of the increased geometry if only just due to sheer size.
Speak to Bill Moss, he has one:

Lot's and lots of fab work needed to get 404's under a G but well worth it,
Have a look here for some pics of mine,

but bill, you never built it so how can you give this guy the way to do it, however Dan has and can  any way if your saying the one you have is the one in the link on pointed three, i understand that this has had the mog axles taken off it and the original ones put back. So nows the time to put us right on this matter :?:
Well ?
Hi G500!
I'm trying to do the same. N since I live in Pakistan, I dont have to be worried about gettin sue'd...lol
If you have any links of such sort it will be appreciated if you could forward them to me.
My brother and I have been wanting to do this for sometime now and now that we have found the appropriate G-wagon, with some help we can begin.
The subject is a 280GD, 1982. The Unimog's diff available here in Pakistan are of the U416, if I'm not mistaken.
We want a bit of an all-rounder--good on road n highways n excellent off-road. We don't plan to keep the same engine...something new with a 5 fwd transmission...any suggestions? When I say 5 speed, i mean something which cruise nicely and not make it a painful experiance!
Could anyone also tell me how much work we are looking at exactly? Both of us have a good mechanical aptitude but we have never tried anything of this sort before.
You reply will be greatly appreciated.
Thank u,
Omar
Do you mean that privat persons doing this will be sued?
I can't believe that everybody who has these axels under there rig will have to remove them.
Or do you mean Merc is after the companies...
