Oh Dear! That has, if I'm not mistaken, a distinct Mitsubishi look to it in certain quarters. Depressing, isn't it? :(

Re: new m class..............

Now I quite like it.

I love my G but I've owned it I 18 months and despite it being the best off roader I've ever had (crossing ploughed fields on our shoot, all diff's locked) she just isn't reliable, throwing another 2K or so at it this summer to get it ready for the winter.

While the G's been of the road I bought a 100K ML320 for £5.5K done 24,000 mile's and never had a problem.

comparing chalk with cheese, a 20 year old car, with a different build quality and off road ability, and of which history you don't really know, of course its going to cost you money. What wouldn't.

In 20 years time the Ml will be just the same, anyone says the G is the best off roader is dumb, horses for courses. What pisses people off is buying a 20 year old car for £5k plu,s and still have to spend money on it. Who's the sucker. These comments are not directed at you personally chilli,by the way.

Agree you can't compare the reliability of a 20 year old car with an unkown history against a new(ish) car which has probably had regular servicing all its life.

I never had any problems with 16 year old G with a known history and regular servicing. The only problem I ever had was I needed to replace the front brake cables and the previous owner replaced the rad and tires.... not bad for a car with 145K miles on the clock when I sold it.

I'll try not to take the 'anyone who thinks the G's the best offroader is dumb' comment person'ly.

However comparing the car to other 'standard off roaders it truly can't be beat, unless you know different Peter, What should I be buying?

With regard to spending money on a 20 year old car, I have no problem with spending more than it's worth to keep a great car on the road, I've had a 29 year old Merc SLC for 7 years, & i set aside approx £1,000 a year to keep it in top condition.

However the point is the SLC never let's me down but the 460 seems to break something every time I take her out, starter motor, thermostat, head gasket and heater motor in the last 3 months! I love the car but can't use it regularly as she isn't reliable.

Did I just buy a pup or is it a trend?

Partly a trend and partly a pup has been bought, If I ever buy another 460 I will make sure it has had the heater motor replaced, fuel tank, wiper spindles and has a fairly decent service record to avoid head gasket issues or over worn engine etc. Its not easy but there are some signs to look for that relate only to G- Wagens. (Look at it this way if you have fixed all the problems you mentioned then your list is getting shorter and your G more reliable by the day  )

Re: new m class..............

i tell you what you dont buy, ford tranists, i have four, all had clutchs at 30k, one has had two new heads in 8k, and 1 with fuel pump, and all under 4 years old. So I need not be preached on realiability. Some would say I was unlucky, Having 20 vehicles ranging from 3.5 t to 10t and having 4 different marques I can give you a list of faults on vehilces that I own with less than 50K on them. So i guess you are unlucky, with a 20 year old motor, how many 4x4's have you owned, myself, 6 different marques. My experience in this area are in order of preference for the top 3 are. 1st. G Wagen 2nd. Nissan patrol Y60. 3rd Toyota prado. the others I have owned are range rovers, suzuki, fourtrak. What cars dont like is lack of use.
