Speedometer- mechanical or electrical
I'm writing under the General Technical as unclear. On my 1992 W463 series 300GD, the speedo started suddenly clicking with speed and wavering wildly. Mileometers both still work as normal. Having tried several sites incl our own, Is the speedo cable driven or electrically sensored? And can I easily disconnect it pending a repair in about a week. Will I damage the head if i leave it as we have several long drives ahead and this started on our drive out last night (and was an annoying unexpected end to a moderately trouble-free year ). The switchover date for electronic hall-sensor speedos was 3/1992 (I suspect that is the build date, not registration), so best check your vehicle VIN to find the build date, as registration in the UK is not an indicator of age, some models built in 1991 were only registered in 1993, getting a K-reg while they were no newer than a H or J-reg.

Also with regards to your question on disconnection, if it is the cable-driven type, then you can remove it by pulling out the instrument cluster first (you can get more space by taking off the steering wheel first). I think it unscrews from the cluster, some people here have had temporary success by undoing it at both ends and running a lubricant through from top to bottom, but that sounds like a temporary solution, if it is the speedo cable at fault.

Hi Tombo there is a "used" option direct from the MB used parts centre, try searching by the part number A4635420206. Expensive at €177, but probably cheaper than new, but I think the best option is to find a shop that specialises in VDO speedo rebuilds/repairs, perhaps some place like this:

Hi All, now clear that speedo head - cable driven- has had its day. Weight/s broken. As I am having a frustrating and quite hopeless time trying to post a simple wanted ad in the new Classified section, am asking here IF ANYONE KNOWS OF AN AVAILABLE G SPEEDO HEAD IN MILES OR KMS FOR a 1991 463series 300GD.
