Re: new member nottingham

Hi , well since buying this g of my partners farther ive gave it a good going over service wise before taking it off roading and each time out ive had starting problems and trouble , first the battery put a new bosch on then out again i had starter motor troubles witch ive had reconditioned , then i was out again and the fuel pump went on me .. i know i should not of done it but i towed home , fitted a new fuel pump and the gearbox is now slipping up , so ive had a lot of stick of the land rover boys on our off roading trips out ( you should of brought a land rover & all that ) so after a while of these none starting moments if i was in a manual i could of bumped it and bin on my way also i think my auto was a bit lazy also changed up on a steep climb just when you dont want it to .

Re: new member nottingham

Welcome ! Plenty of info if you trawl this site...re engine swaps

Easiest is C250td Manual...you just need engine mounts and some cleverness

Of course you need a pedal box and manual IP

Auto not so straight foward unless you go for non electric one which limits you to direct top gear and therefor high rpm on mway ...you cant use existing box...starter wrong side for any upgrade engine

As far as I know ALL 0.79/ 0 .8 o/drive autoboxes are fly by wire

Hi tony , thanks for this info , if i cant find the parts of a breaker its nice to know a c250td manual works ;)

Re: new member nottingham

the g wagen is unique in that you can actually tow start one with auto box...place in neutrel until u get to 20 mph drop it into second and she will eventually start...done it a few times...i much preferred an auto whren off roading...u can change down without losing traction

Re: new member nottingham

hi jamie.

i have a 5 speed manual from a w124 250D behind my 177 ps 606a td.been fine for the last few years. afaik this box has the highest torque rating from the w124 , w201 era of boxes.

i think axels route is the best one. a 6 speed from a 220 cdi or 270 cdi will work great behind a 2.9td or a 300td.

but why not see what it would cost to get the auto on your 280 fixed. i would.....

Re: new member nottingham

ive got to admit this is my very first automatic off roader and tbh i do like not on & off the clutch on & off the steering wheel every 30 seconds and if it can be bumped bye towing you might of just switched my way of thinking , other plus side it would be a lot quicker to get the gearbox out fixed and back in rather than surfing & running round trying to locate all the manual parts . the g could be back breathing again in under 2 weeks ;)

Re: new member nottingham

hi hus

all this talk of turbo diesel & manual conversion is making me want to go for it asap ,

i was thinking of just getting back on the road asap for now ,because i thought a full engine & gearbox td conversion would of bin loads of hassle for me but was going to do it next year any way but since joining on ere it seems people know what to do what to buy so it looks like im going to go for it and get it in to a manual td .. happy days
