Recently I sadly had to let my 230GE petrol/lpg go.  Got a Land Rover Discovery in it's place - BIG MISTAKE!  Traded my G in against the Discovery, dealer gave me £3000 for it - just seen it a month later on his website, all repainted for £14,999 - how sick do I feel now?!?! Although he has lied about various things - 66,000 miles should read 166,000 - it doesn't have a full service history, it certainly had more than 4 owners etc - bit of a charlatan methinks!

Anyway - I really miss my G Wagen!  So, on the lookout for another now.  I've had a few petrol Gs over the years and always had them converted to LPG as I can't afford to run them on petrol.  However, there have always been problems with the LPG of one sort or another.  I'm thinking of getting a diesel this time - is there any advantage cost-wise in having a diesel?  I've never had a diesel G before and know absolutely nothing about the engines.

Any advice re running costs of petrol vs diesel would be very welcome.  Does anyone have the actual figures for MPG for petrol vs diesel?

Suzie

FWIW the repaint is hidheous - they didn't even bother to remove the rubber trim surprise

Perhaps you should report them to trading standards - they are obviously knowingly  mis-representing the vehicle's history.

As far as MPG goes - I'm not convinced there is such a substantial saving to be had.

My 300GD does about 14MPG if I rag it, probably 18 motorway.. the trouble is that unless you buy a more modern CDI (or compromise for a LHD mid 90s 300 Turbodiesels) for which you will pay a lot more, I'm not sure you will ever impact that significantly on the cost of pushing 2.5 tons of metal with the aerodynamics of a brick through the atmosphere.

As you know, LPG will give you a more substantial saving, but people report very mixed results with the older engines ( I seem to remember someone saying that the Bosch Jettronic fuel injection is part of the problem).

When you factor in all the costs (capital, depreciation for non standard vehicle) and fuel, I don't think there's much in it unless you do significant milelage (which wouldn't be my first choice of vehicle if I was anyway).

Re: MPG petrol vs diesel

Circa £15K for a W460 is grossly over priced, had it been a W463, I could have understood.

For the sake of the new buyer lets hope, they know their G-Wagens.

LPG performance and reliability depends on whos kit you opt for. Some of the more modern kits are sophisticated but to gain an advantage in economy depends on the annual mileage you cover. Anything less than 12,000 miles an annum does not recoup your investment within the year represented in fuel savings. Diesels are marginally better in the fuel return they give you but lost out on pricing and Diesel performance is adequate to sluggish depending on the diesel you choose.

Your budget will dictate the Chassis type you go for. W460 the type you have sold will be comparatively cheaper to buy if a good example is available, prepare to be patient about it. The latter G-Wagen like the W463 Chassis will be higher in price.

Re: MPG petrol vs diesel

My foray into the world of Diesel started with a 2ltr MB A-Class.  Disappointing, although it did avg 41mpg over 3 years.  Hampered by the fact it was an Auto (of a sort) and Diesels don't like the constant kickdown and consequently higher revs.

Then I tried a 2.2lt Saab with Diesel.  Ran really nice for a time on cheaper Bio, but developed a stutter whihc I can't quite solve (given up)  Again, the fuel economy is not that great - mid to high 30's.

In both cases I think I could get a petrol to achieve within 10% of the diesel without the higher fuel cost and the heavier and more expensive to maintain deisel.  Not to mention they still all smoke.

I'm goin back to petrol, and if I can get LPG will try that.  Modern is also better, for both diesel and petrol.

Re: MPG petrol vs diesel

btw - my G came from Walton Motors all of 25 years ago.  Always heard they were OK (was a long time ago though) and 4x4 specialist.

Your old G looks good, especially inside - perhaps you should have shifted it on GWOA, because you are never going to get good money when trading in.  That's a very high price though, maybe they will get £10k ?

Re: MPG petrol vs diesel

Not Many lwb 230 around and that is a very late model with good options !!

What color was it before??

What made you swap? I guess it might be hard to get your hands on a replacement but there are few 463 for sale around !

No much difference in consumption between diesel and petrol!

good luck

Re: MPG petrol vs diesel

I lokked at a  Blue Discovery S or T reg before christmas from this garage (garbage)....... the thing was totally unroadworthy... and not fit for sale...steering pulled to the right (obviously bent) and it had terminal rust in the rear...with some poor door shut plates re welded and crudely over panted... The salesman didnt seeem to be telling the truth about it either... no service history. even though he claimed it had...(100k holes in it!!)   i walked and vowed never to do buisiness from them again..... im not surprised at your experience..at all.... i didnt trust much that they said.... and to try and sell an unroadworthy vehicle...which they let me drive... is (criminal?)

Are they going for the 'catholic' finnish? A bit like the pope mobile (who has a 500 wink) with those white rubber strips. It is criminal that they should almost double their price after such a manky re paint job.

Petrol/Diesel.... well depends on what you like, LPG, hydrogen, Chip fat oil etc etc. I had a simpl conversion done to hydrogen (see in alternative fuels) and get between 12-20% (dependant on driving style) more fuel. Worth considering.
