Mind teaser
This is a test run, to see how Mind teasers may or may not be taken up?
Sadly, as a motivator, there is only a virtual prize for the winner - choose what you would like, and if you have won, its yours, in your own mind - no outlay, no disappointment, neat or what?
Dead line is in two weeks time: 8/5/12, by 15:00 hrs.
Conditions: If you work for Mercedes or are a professional mechanic, please refrain from entering.
Question: On the Ashtaroth Alloy wheel (picture included), what are the five, small-hole drillings for; made in between the wheel bolt holes for?
By the way, these holes are common to all Mercedes Benz original wheels, not just the Ashtaroth wheel.
If you have suggestions to improove on this and make comments for, or against, please feel free, to give your feed backs.
Good Luck,
My suggestion ... to mount the wheel balance reflector.
Well, interesting, I would say that they are part of the design that allows residual water that can collect behind the alloy impress, can , due to the centripetal forces, drain out, and therefore stop the alloy from corroding from behind?
Spider1V
I'd say similar - moisture/water gets behind the wheel and the flange is hot so it evaporates off and needs breath holes to facilitate the drying out, otherwise the moisture leads to corrosion and binding of the alloy to the flange?
I did wonder what those holes were for. Looking forward to the answer.
Are they locating holes to hold the wheel at manufacture and accurately locate and drill the wheel bolt holes after casting?
Are these are the location holes for the robotised wheel fitting equipement to hold the the wheel while it is attatched to the new vehicle during assembly.
Or they just look good?
Is that robot called 'Hans' ? Perhaps Hole And Nut Screwer?
Offical Mercedes wheel alignment I think??
Rakesh,
A rather intriguing question ! The trouble is that the small holes on the alloy wheels are not unique to Mercedes. I think BMW as well as some upmarket Minis also have them. I may be wrong but I tend to believe that they are there for securing wheel alignment equipment ??? Do i get any marks for this?
Jdring,
Sounds like a screwfix ! By the way, Screwfix is not a dating agency.
Yep, like an O-Ring but sportier.
Yay I get the lolly....................Wait does that make me a nerd??
My vote is more please I like a challenge.

Hello Rick,
Good attempt, but wrong answer. Your thoughts are on the correct line though.
Keep watching.....
