What's going on at MB re G-Wagen parts?? Over the 11yrs I've owned my 280GE I've frequently been pleasantly surprised at the price of OE parts but recently all has changed! Yesterday quoted £449 + VAT for the exhaust front downpipes. A month ago I bought downpipes for one side of my W126 500SE from the same dealer for £138 + VAT and I'm buggered if I can see how there is any more material / time involved in the G part. Both 2-into-1 and approx same length / diameter / bends / connections. OK the G has a couple of short lengths of flexi but really!!

(Anyone had the flexi's replaced? Mine has split so that's my plan now. Do you know what diameter they are? )

This week also bought the short breather pipe that runs from the cam cover to the air intake on the 460 - wait for it - £37!! Even the Parts Manager was embarassed and said that he'd assumed it would be some sort of "special armoured hose"  but it looks like something you could buy from Halfords for a few quid. Also priced up the fuel tank sender unit - £220 - so I'll be continuing to use my bamboo dipstick.

Is it a plot to price the older trucks off the road in anticipation of the new ones coming to the UK again??

I can not quite remember the actual size, but when I used to replace the flexi's, they were in between 2" to slightly under 2.5".  The one from Bosal; the closest fitting one to the Mercedes bore was marginally bigger, which meant carefully welding and it acting as a filler as well.

If the  exhaust price is or has increased, it may be worth while to get one of these exhaust specialist to fabricate you one.  Obviously, they will want your old unit as a template to work from.  You can consider having the system in mild steel or there is a choice to two stainless steel grades to select from.

Hi Rakesh

Was replacing the flexi a successful repair even though the Borsal flexi was a little bigger? It's been pointed out to me that the fit is crucial to avoid the prop hitting the flexi so I wondered what your experience has been??
