I am liking this very much and feel that at least some one from the uk should buy it this instance.
Orc sell these at around £10k a pop
A reliable source tells me it is/was a Paris-Dakar G600.
Fibreglass body not street legal ??
Eddie.
I have never heard of a Paris-Dakar G600. Do you have any information on them?
The only info I can find is regarding the earlier G wagons from the 1980s but none of these were 600s only 230s and 280s.
I can see no reason why the bodyshell would not be street legal if fitted to a G chassis. It must be the same principal as a LandRover Bowler kit and there are plenty of those on the roads.
According to Jörg Sand's Das Neue Grosse Mercedes G-Klasse Buch, Klaus Seppi and Clay Regazzoni entered a 500 GE 6.0 AMG in the 1989 Paris-Dakar Rallye. The M117 6-litre engine delivered 331 HP and was the first G-Wagen to break the 200 km/h max speed mark.
In 1989 entered Seppi this competition a light-build G with AMG 6.0 V8 power (330 HP). As with the sister car entered by Clay Regazzoni, the vehicle was fitted with a carbon-kevlar bodywork and the engine was moved 30 cm to the rear. Seppi could win one stage and humiliate the Works Peugeot team with a lead of almost one hour. The final win wasn't achiveable: the fast privately-run 560 GE AMGs had nothing to do against the multimillion spenditure boasted by the works- teams.
Thanks for the information about the Paris- Dakar G600, although as you rightly point out its correct entry name was the GE500.
It is very difficult to find contemporary pictures of the G's in action during the Rally of 1989. However I have been able to find one and also a photo of someones later recreation with an unfortunate aero front end.
I have also included a photo of a road going GE500 which I should have bought 5 years ago when i was offered it for £11k.
A limited-edition 500GE for 11k, not bad at the time, assuming all was well with the car! Did the vendor change his mind?

I was looking for a replacement for my 300GEL and thought that the GE500 would fit the bill nicely. I eventualy got cold feet because it was left hand drive and only had the two locking diffs. In hindsight for all that I use my G for this would not have mattered very much. It was in very good condition and I am sure it only done around 70k miles, a missed opportunity to own a very rare G for not a lot of money.
