Ignition problem?

OK, another query: Last night I turned off the ignition and thought it had taken a little too long to cut out, but this morning, I turned it off and the engine continued running, Had to stall it to cut it. Is this likely to be an ignition switch problem or a diesel pump cut-off problem? And is it likely to be something simple enough I could investigate myself (only qualification I have is enthusiasm, not skill)

Re: Ignition problem?

Hi
you most prabably have a vacuum leak >>>>>>>>>be careful when driving as this can affect the braking capability....there will be  a vacuum pipe off  or split somewhere or the damage to the front end may have cracked the large round section underneath the radiator seen from inside the front wheel arch about 8 cm in diameter ..if you cannot see any small pipes adrift .get an aerosol brake cleaner and focus a light spray in various areas until you get an increase in engine rpm ( at idfle) your leak will be in that localised area..***.might be the  pipe that is attached to the back of the spotlights

Re: Ignition problem?

Hello Audiominx,

You did well to stall the engine off.  It sounds very much, as fixwin38 has mentioned, a vacuum problem.  If a leak is developing on the vacuum system of the cut off circuit, you will initially get a lazy switching off.

On some injector pumps there is a cut off lever that you can use to switch off the engine but this can be cumbersome to use on a regular basis.  Basically, the air filter has to be removed to gain better access to view the injector pump, let alone the cut off lever.

Possible leaks could be at the cut off solenoid at the pump or any where along the path from it to the vacuum pump, or at the back of the ignition switch, where there is a block of pipes conveying onto a block attached on the switch.

My view, is this is a job for the professional and I would suggest the garage look at this for you.  This by no means suggests you can not do the job, but there would be a few bits to take off to gain access to the pipe work and requires knowledge of the pipe work.  The job can be done by following the pipe work, but this can be tedious.

I was trying to post a picture of the pump area of the vacuum pipes, but I am experiencing continues broadband dropping out at present, so i cannot do that just yet.

Sorry, I can not be much more helpful than this,

Cheers,

Roly

Re: Ignition problem?

The cut off lever is easily accessible from under the bonnet. If you look at the fuel pump from directly above you can see it. With long fingers or a screwdriver it's easy to push it down to kill the engine. Of course that is not convenient in the long term but better than stalling it.
Check the vacuum as the guys suggest by trying the centre diff lock. The ignition switch actually has the two vacuum lines going into it to operate the shutdown, they are brown and go to the fuel pump/vacuum source.

Peter,
Humour me - what is a vacuum pipe doing connected to the back of a spotlight?

Re: Ignition problem?

Cut off lever proving invaluable until MB come up with the part tomorrow. A vaccuum stop solenoid is what is coming. Cheap part but the work is apparently fiddly so will probably cost a lot more than the bit!

Well done with the G diagnosis.  I am having a start problem with my diesel Saab95 and its taking ages to figure out.
