Does my 1993 300GEL have a heated windscreen washer bottle or a system that heats the washer fluid?

Sometimes when I spray the washer it appears to be hot water going on to the screen and it does not freeze up yet on other occasions the water is cold and the nozzles freeze up.

If it does have a heating system could someone explain how it works. Thanks.

Fixwin, do you know what controls whether the current is going to these heaters or not.  I've been a bit perplexed by the eratic nature of this myself recently and have been contemplating wiring them directly from a switch on the dash.

This might help.

I remember reading something about the heated mirrors coming on at temps below 6C (might be controlled by a thermo-mechanical switch in the mirror itself) so they might be the same, but I can't find any confirmation or the source.

Re: Heated windscreen washer.

Hi All
I do not believe they are thermally controlled..... just activated by the action of washing..there are wires and terminal ends that tend to corrode which may cause intermittent faults

Re: Heated windscreen washer.

Thankyou for your responses gentlemen.

Apparently the jets are heated by a wire inside each jet. I am still unclear as to whether this is activated by simply using the washer or when the temperature guage sender reads below a certain point. On later Mercedes  models the  mirrors and the jets are heated automaticaly when the temperature falls below 3 degrees.

It would appear that a heated washer bottle was also an optional extra on the G and this was heated by an internal water pipe fed from the heating system. I am investigating to see if I have this option fitted.

Re: Heated windscreen washer.

hi all,

As my G isn't at our house here, I can't go out and check this one (as it also bothered me on our one so far this winter). If its of any help. on my W126 a water pipe (that is connected to the engine cooling system) goes directly into the water bottle and heats the fluid. I have never had frozen jets on this (or on another one I owned before, when we lived in New England - and there were a few VERY cold nights there). It really is a very effective system. One could probably go to a breaker and ask for the washer bottle complete with piping from a 126 and fix it into the W463 or 460 engine compartment somewhere and this might cure the intermittent (jet-heated) versions fitted. If anyone does it (or has done it), I'd also be interested how well it works.

Regards/Ph

Re: Heated windscreen washer.

If you go down the route of heating the windscreen wash bottle you will need to change the water frequently and make sure you add screenwash as the hot water is more likely to provide a culture medium for organisms, especially those causing Legionnaire's disease. This is thought to account for the higher incidence of LD in taxi drivers (British Medical Journal sometime last year).  Screenwash apparently inhibits the growth of the bacteria.
