E300 Engine Conversion
in mixed driving I get 19/20 I can get 25 on a steady 60 mph on a motorway which is good as I ever had with my gd300 w460. Mine is manual, swb and has a abreviated exhaust with K&N filter. I also had a ge280 w460 auto which would return 13/15 mpg, a manual will get you 17/18 mpg this might seem reasonable compared to a ge300 until you remember it has full time 4x4.
Well that's a lot better than my 280ge, hmm... food for thought, especially if it's a simpler swap than a diesel? I'm only daydreaming here you understand, I've got a stripdown (which I've barely started because life seems to get in the way) and a ton of bodywork to do before I even contemplate anything such as an engine upgrade! I'm going to see if I can find some old threads and have a read..
you could fit a manual 5 speed gear box from a diesel or a 230, quite a bit of work but less than a full engine change
To the 280 you mean? I had contemplated that but not looked into it. I do prefer manuals (in general) to an auto and I had wondered about a fifth gear being better for consumption and easier on the engine doing motorway miles.
yes, the 280 is a nice engine if a bit thirsty but a manual box gives much more control, have a chat with the G-Class centre in Malvern

Would it not be cheaper (and more comfortable) to get a barge to soak up the M way miles? Eg a Lexus LS or a GS can be had for sub 2k and will do the job easily and in some comfort. Personally I rarely take my G on the M way. It's not what it's for, still, I guess if needs must.......

I have a van which is my daily driver and I'm quite happy bimbling about in that but I'm hoping to do some extended overlanding trips in future with the G, it's all pie in the sky at the moment but it's given me the excuse and a little momentum to spend some time and money to get it back on the road.
With regards the 280, I have a spare engine (which I bought thinking it might come in handy for parts) which I acquired at the beginning of the summer for very little money so in some ways it makes sense to stick with that engine. I might just have to acquire a bowser to tow behind! Tony Bruegger very kindly offered a little while back for me to visit his place to have a look at what's required in taking the body off the chassis so might have to have a natter with him regarding engine and gearbox options. I do like the idea of a manual gearbox whatever the engine though.
That makes sense, only thing I would wonder about is just how good the manual box is. I have no idea but I know that in "normal" MB cars, manual boxes are not their stongest point. Someone here will know how good they are I'm sure. Meantime, I'll stick to automatics
.
Did someone say the 103 was rubbish? I agree it's a good engine. Whether it should be in a G is another matter....
talk to Peter Perfect he had a 560 engine in one of his
A few people have used a M117 which is the engine from 1980s MBs. It has basic electronics. A more modern version is the M113 which was used in the G500 from 98-2006 ish. It has a full ecu which you would need to reprogramme.
Both would provide plenty of power but the gearing of the G means that the engine would be reving higher than is required. Consequently they would consume plenty of fuel.
Neither of them would be cheap to install and many components would need to be fabricated. Virtually everything mentioned at the beginning of this post regarding the diesel would be necessary for a v8.
Tony Baskill has done several v8 conversions into a 460, 463 and his custom G using a amg55 engine. Give him a call if you want to get some details
My advice, buy a g500 and a polo for your daily drive ... Use the 500 for pleasure .. You will save thousands of pound and still enjoy a great car quite "cheaply"
