All Terrain Tyre Recommendations
Looking for some Forum help with some advice on Tyres.
I have a W460 1989 G Wagen. It currently runs on a set of mud tyres, but looking for an all-terrain set to replace them.
The Mud tyres create a lot of noise and obviously not great for fuel economy or daily road use.
I'm looking for some new tyres for everyday use for a daily commute.
Can anyone recommend a good set of mid-price range tyres that will do the job and also look good!!
Thanks.
1st choice would be BFG All terain, though lots of people seem to be going to General Grabber AT2 which are a bit cheaper.
Both not cheap though, over £100 per tyre.
You don't say if you have 15 or16" wheels?
Same here, have Kumho kKL71 mud tyres which are much too hard for road use (despite what a lot of reviews have said) and are 'interesting' on a wet greasy road, ABS nearly has epileptic fit!!.Will more than likley go for the BFG all terrain.
On a recent journey on bad tarmac roads rear passengers complained about harshness.Just wondering if changing from 225/75/16 KUMHO MT to 235/85/16 BFG AT tyres would slightly soften the ride and increase gearing for motorway use. Tyre comparison charts give an 8.5% increase in gearing.
Also recently fitted rear springs, not MERCEDES originals, and don't think they have the progressive rates like original springs.Anybody got suggestions or ideas, 1994 LWB 300 GDL
Down to personal taste really.
I like the Coopers Zeon LTZ, front set have lasted well over 50K and will need changing soon. Had them filled with Nitrogen and they are bloody amazing now, no loss of pressure in over three months , great in the rain, great in the snow, quiet and very good off road - last AGM only G to make it up the wet grassy steep hill! at Ashover.

Depending on the width you get, I went massive, it will decrease your MPG, but if your sensible, I can not imagine it will effect the MPG that much.
Best of luck

I intend to try to 235/85 16 at least my speedo should be dead on!
Extra gearing would be great on Motorway, though on rural roads don't know if it will struggle, extra height most usefull in deep snow.
As Spider says Coopers also a good tyre,
Springs, a real problem only catalogue with lots of aftermarket variation was GKN but I suspect they maybe a similer price to MB, was thinking of those inflateable air helper springs?
You just think you went massive Spider, I actually did go massive at 325x60x15 BFG AT KO
They did well in excess of 50k miles with plenty of life. I noticed in the advert from the seller of my old G that despite a full overhaul he decided that the tyres were still ok.
I've just changed from BFG MT to Grabber AT2 on my '89 460 and they are certainly quieter and seem to have less 'drag' - truck seems livelier altogether. Size for both sets 245 / 75 / 16. I personally wouldn't go taller as the MT's in particular could foul on full lock. Haven't been out in the wet yet but I'm looking forward to better braking! That was my main reason for changing - other half wants to borrow the 460 and on the MT's it could be a bit of a handful for the un-initiated! I paid £500 fitted and balanced. MT's now on my son's Disco 2 cos he only cares about appearance rather than performance!!
Not sure if they're available in suitable sizes for W460 but I can recommend Toyo Open Country ATs. Mine are 255/55x18 on my W463 G500 replacing General Grabber ATs.
I've found them better than the Generals all round - quiet on the road with plenty of predictable grip including on wet and snowy roads (and we get plenty of wet and snowy roads up here in North West Scotland!) and pretty good off road but not for anything too extreme. Tyre life has been good and, when the time comes for replacement, I'll be sticking with them.
I think so, Nexen a Chinese tyre??
You could always compare onlne? BFG will last a long time, though at nearly £600 for 4 so they should
Or look at the coopers......?

maxxis seem to be all the rage in many countries inc cyprus and australia...!!
bighorn, trepador are very good tyres at a great price too.
i have extreme trepadors on my cabrio G and they are competition grade and suprsingly quiet. they are 37's. the 31 option is far less aggressive on the side wall pattern but share the same tread pattern in a smaaler scale ofcourse.
i would highly recommend maxxis.

What did you end up going for, sbb? I'll at least second the Coopers - very good in most conditions!
And to add to the tips in this thread: if you want to order online, www.voucherbox.co.uk often has voucher codes for a discount at Black Circles etc, especially when you time it right.
Have you ever consider the Good Year ATs? Quite competitively priced with a bit of "negotiation". They seem to last for ever and not too noisy on teh motorway.
Sorry, forgot to mention the size.
They are 31 x 10.5 x 15.
I went to my local tyre place and they could only offer 2 options:
Nexen AT at £96 (Inc VAT & Fitted)
BFG AT at £144 (Inc VAT & Fitted)
Sound about right??
