2001 G55 LHD Import
Apart from the Brabus bumper which I don't much like and the fact that it's a left hooker which is not ideal, this looks to actually be a G55 AMG (there seems to be a habit of describing G500's as G55's) with only 56K miles. I think I've asked before if anyone knew this car and now I'm wondering if it's worth going to see. It seems a bit overpriced but if it's a straight motor I might be interested. Can anyone think of anything obvious that I've missed that will save me a half a day and seventy squids worth of petrol?
Also, does being an import have any negative significance?
Thanks,
Ian
If it is a personal import it's from Europe not the USA as it doesn't have the additional front indicators the yankee cars have. I'm pretty certain there was no rhd version of the G55 at that time so it could well be a Merc supplied car.
Hmmmm - First thing I would do is Ask for the Vin Number and then check here on the forum. That should answer a lot of questions.
I think this maybe the owner of Greenoaks old car - I seem to rember he had a LHD that he used to drive across to France on a number of occasions.
Dispite the asking price I would say one would pay that for a RHD, but for a LHD I would say closer to 29-32K
I am sure there were some G55's RHD on 2001 guise, I think Buckalec had one, they come with the normally asperated 349BHP 5lt V8's - the same one thats on the ML's of the time
Hope that helps

Might save your self a bit if you imported from Germany yourself, but doesn't seem to be a huge amount in it. But you will have a better selection to choose from.
No RHD's of that model. The few 2001 RHD's are based on earlier G Wagen (1999/ 2000 model)
As Joe says check out VIN
I have a 2001 G500.
The rust bits I can see:
Mostly stone chip at the top of the Windscreen
Bit of bubbling on the rear and top of the door.
Check around the wheel arches that the bit they put to protect it is still intact. But aprt from that have seen worst rust on newer cars.
Not that I want to confuse you but have you considered this? Its not AMG, but its a 500 that has a more powerful engine, is 'newer' and much less expensive and easier going off road? THough the two tone paint job maybe a bit much.

Think it's about 55 hp more.
The G500 has 296 bhp and the G55 (non compressor) has 348 bhp.
The advert Spider posted states that particular 2004 G500 has 388bhp which is probably a typo. The American spec G550 has a 5.5litre 32valve engine which produces 382bhp but that was only available from 2005.
I think Spider is mistaken when he says the 2004 G500 is more powerful than the 2001 G55.
Its been know to happen. ;)
I was mistaken and thought it was the 2004 V8 5.5 (which is what I thought the advert said) :(. You are correct, however if its an AMG you want - then go for it, however I was really just puting it up there as a concept in that - You could get a newer car for your monsy, and if you got the post 2005 your V8 will be more poawerful than the AMG your looking at.
(blush) Sorry

I would agree with you Spider that the later model G is a better buy at the moment but I suspect that the rarity of the G55 AMG will see it hold its value better than the standard G500 in years to come. Not that there is anything wrong with a G500 of course, just thier owners :-)
Yeah - so lovley, cuddly and hadnsome..... :)

What left hooker are you refering to ?
The 55 on ebay I guess.
who says it has 292bhp. People selling it must be mistaken,
Hi Ian
I thought that was the one you were refering to but as hard as I look at the advert I can not see any reference to horse power. Is there a 'secret' button to click on ?
I take it you have got the vin number to be able to check the datacard ? Does it state engine size, that would be the easiest way to tell if its a 55 or 500.
All sounds a bit fishy now. 292 bhp doesn't relate to anything I can think of.
As far as I understand a 2001 G55 would have been made complete in Graz, engine coming from AMG.
This is the same type of G as our Chairman, David has. He aquired his from German dealer s/h. Have a chat with him and you should be able to compare the datacard info.
The AMG55 in 2001 had 388hp. Response refers to G in post 1
Can you scan & post data card, must be something on there to give some clues.
Thought it was nearer to 350 bhp.
You are correct. I thought that I had read 388 somewhere but can't find it now.
The only way to be sure is to ie it up against Spider's 500 and when you see him in the mirror, you know that is has the 55 engine
if it was an AMG of this period it would have been 348BHP
Spider1V
LOL
You don't need a 55 to do that, I've heard a 230 did it. ;)
I thought it was a bit strange that the advert did not have a photo of the engine considering that would be the main attraction of a G55.
Then you need to clean your ears out.........Sprinter boy! :)

Hi all
Having been entrusted with the VIN number, as far as I can see...
This is a G500 2000MY Shipped 2001 M113 V8 E50 218Kw 292bhp 296ps model
It is a Bau Muster 463.248 for a standard G500 European spec, it has the MR6 sales code for M113 E50 218kW and no mention of any AMG spec. Sold to country code 219 Hamburg, Germany.
As far as I am aware, these were only upgraded to special order AMG spec for the Japanese market on that year and although it looks like a very good job has been done to make it look like an AMG, a few little bits are missing, like the Gear Lever badge is still MB and not AMG and no picture of the engine? With AMG top cover etc.

AMG my backside !!!
only just read the thread... the only thing AMG on that lovely G500 are the alloys.....
the arches and seats should have told the story anyhow.
rgds hus
Are the arches different then?
yep, like the ones on the G350 2012 that was on a thread here recently... they cover the extra width of the amg alloys unlike the ones on that G500..
bloody expensive too !!
Oh, I thought that was just the Kompressors
Talk to Axel..... re transplanting your AMG into your G? (evil laugh)
Spider1V
As Roly suggested, may be an idea to compare Datacard with David Watkins.
His E mail is in newsletter, Northern Rep.
Ian are you saying you now think it is a genuine G55. What makes you think so ?
If the AMG upgrade was available to order via MB in 2002 then surely the data card would show that it was a G55 rather than a G500.
G55 vs G55k wheel arches
Hope the news is positive. Looks like it may well be the case that the earliest models with that type of dash were taken to AMG.
Of course that money would almost get a Kompressor in Germany.
eg. G55K
Whoops, forgot the link!
