What does it mean when it says' Check gas cap' on the dash- But it isn't petrol cap?

Hi,

Had the above wording (or similiar) come up on my dashboard a while back but not anything to do with the filler cap. 

 

Now engine mangament light is on all the time. Clear engine mangement light and after a while the same comes up on dash,

 

Is it a fuel purge system problem and what's the easy fix?

Not sure what G you have, however I did a google search and came up with the following, hope it is of use?

It's a 500 baby!!! I think they are fitted with a V8 petrol engine....sure somebody will correct me ;)

It is quite possible the fuel filler cap is not tighten properly or has a perished seal in which case get a new seal or new cap and replace as necessary. the Engine light will need resetting although by my understanding the light can go out by itself after a few cycles of the light coming on and settling down. - source of information Mercedes Benz forum.

Ok i'm going to check the fuel cap in the first instance. 

My mechanic nearly put in and ordered a charcoal filtration system without doing this (£183 plus vat) so i will check the cap first.
