W460 at Auction - Eye watering bids !
Noticed this on auction site....£60k resto ??
https://www.carandclassic.com/auctions/1989-mercedes-benz-280-ge-4wdB18
Nicely presented and a nice up graded engine but essentially a bitsa.
Do you know the asking price because £60,000 is beyond silly to me.
I suspect if we ever see such silly prices for early G-wagens it will be for those with originality and history
It's nice. Looks like a good restoration. Not keen on the seats or door panels, or some of the dash cover up. And that gear stick gaiter. OK with the 'upgrades'
Clearly not done any miles since completed (always a worry). But 45k bids already. (I couldn't justify 30k even if a stack money has been spent on it.)
It used to be that auctions were a venue for money laundering. You put something for sale and someone buys it. You get clean money, minus the fees (hence the inflated prices to offset that, on things that are subjective, like art and classics). Who knows. I hope this car actually puts some miles on the road. Its too nice to sit in a collection. Maybe it will turn up here.
a bit strange; no photos of the restauration which one would expect at that price; OM605 (150hp/ 280NM) faster than rebuilt M110 (185hp/ 240NM) sounds not quite right as well; as gooch said, G350 the easier and more comfortable option at that price-point.
I have seen this being built and restored
Originally he went with a fully rebuilt M110 with a more modern fuel injection system but he didn't like it
The OM605 won't be running a stock tune and with mechanical IP will probably be 200 bhp plus 25 mpg rather than 14 of the 280
And much better driveability
I couldn't question the build or quality and it probably does stand him at that money
Whether it's worth that is another question but if you wanted to build your perfect G that's what it would cost you
Some people just don't like the new models and the associated issues and I guess the depreciation
Each to their own I guess but it's all the money... and a bit more ! But I'll be surprised if it doesn't find a happy new owner...
it is a 605 (2.5l) not a 606 (3l) engine.
and as far as the rebuilt 110 goes, in my opinion he should have ditched the 4-speed automatic and replaced it with a 5-speed manual. This does not give you 606 torque levels but it is an OEM package with good performance. Combine it with a sport exhaust and it has appeal. Technically it is then a AMG 280GE which was sold in the 1980s.
This is all subjective and as gav said, it you want your personal G you can specify what you desire. But I question whether a £45k 350 will show more depreciation than the car on offer over the next three years.

This intrigues me as it implies that they ditched the K-Jetronic and tried to replace it with an electronic fuel injection system. I wonder why, this is not plug and play, you need to modify the entire ignition/ injection system to make it work. A lot of effort for lower fuel consumption. I did some internet research but found no answers.
Made £55k from what i can see and the guy blew a packet....
"Fitech throttle body EFI will replace it"
Build thread here....

It's good to have that back story to what is clearly a well restored 460. I can only assume that the buyer was well aware of this open book information.
As you say Gav, if you want a mint 460 restoration, it costs a lot in blood, sweat and money.
Cant understand it.... for £50k ????? you can buy a nice 2012/13 G350 Lwb Auto
