1997 g 300 TD
Hello all,
I am about to purchase a 1997 G300 TD with 137km on it. Is there any concerns I should have about my purchase. It is the engine with 170Hp that I am after, after just selling my 300GD 463 with only 120HP. I don't need a lot of HP just enough to get up highway hills without rolling along at 75km/h
I wish it had less bells and whistles that I fear will fail eventually. I am trying to find a compromise between good highway driving, good mileage, and reliability.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Is that the OM606 engine?

Should be.

If it's the 300TD it should have 177bhp.
Like buying any G, go through everything, like Russ says they only have limited electronics but any faults will be expensive to rectify
Make sure everything in the cabin works, make sure the rear door is rust free, closes properly and isn't out of line. Also check thoroughly the rear shock mounts and spring mounts, with the age of the truck they should be OK but I have replaced them on a 2002 G55. Try to start the engine from cold, it should start on all six cylinders and run smoothly straight away
Where is the truck? Take some pics and post them up here, there's some hawk eyed folks on here
Regards Gordon
The wheels are not standard they are 18" AMG. No big deal. There rear springs look much higher than standard which could be annoying. It should sit level sothe clearance front and rear should be equal. Normally high lift springs give a harder ride. You could change them to standard if it you wanted. Radio is non standard but otherwise it looks original.
Something doesn't look right in photo 3.
the thread starter doesn't say where he is based, if its Canada or Northern USA these are areas that have very severe winters so the salt used might explain the corrosion, which would be slightly out of the ordinary in the UK. My 91 car has no rust scabs at all. As Russ has said the engine may well outlast its immediate surroundings if effective rust proofing is not indulged on a regular basis, a very nice vehicle though.

The right hand rear wheel is parked on a kerb Roly
Sorry no it's not, on second glance
Gordon is correct. the vehicle is not parked on a level surface so that might explain the increased rear spring clearance.
It is the 606 engine. Limit rust to the typical rear corner panel and the passenger door handle, all else is good.
$37000 Canadian or / $26700. US or / $24500EU. Still a bit of coin but seems like a realistic price.
